Clik here to view.Last summer I was vacationing with my daughters, ages 9 and 12. After lunch one day, we stumbled into a little bookstore. I was feeling generous, happy and relaxed in that way vacations can make one, and decided to buy them both a book. Usually I let them pick one for themselves, but because of their ages and how much they love to read, I decided to buy them two of my favorite novels, both of which influenced me a great deal personally and professionally.
For my younger daughter, I bought a beautiful, unabridged copy of “Anne of Green Gables“. For my older, “To Kill A Mockingbird“.
I’m sure you can imagine how thrilled I was to see them devouring these gifts from my heart during the rest of vacation. It felt like I was introducing dear, old friends to my daughters. Anne and Scout were so real to me when I was younger that I knew them as well as my real best friend. In hindsight, probably better, as we don’t really know what’s going on with children behind closed doors. In the pages of a book we know it all in a way that gives us insight into ourselves and the world in which we dwell.
What are the two books you would choose for your children or grandchildren? Would it thrill you when they fell in love with your old friends?
