Clik here to view.If a book becomes a bestseller these days, it’s often made into a movie. I don’t know about you, but I find that the movie versions never quite live up to the book. Part of it, for me, is that the details captured in a novel don’t translate well to the big screen, where a story has to be told in under two hours. Plus, a movie is a director’s vision, which might not be the same as mine when it comes to theme, what the characters look like, or even how the setting is depicted. What I love about books is that I can imagine it however I want. Often that doesn’t match up with what ends up on the movie screen.
For example, I imagined Peeta from “Hunger Games” completely differently from the actor, Josh Hutcherson, who plays him in the movie. When I first heard the casting, I thought, oh no, he’s totally wrong. I know others felt the same about Jennifer Lawrence. That said, once I saw the movie, I couldn’t imagine anything but the two actors who played them, thus obliterating the images of my imagination. In this case, it was worth losing my own images because the movies are so well done, and the two young actors are fantastic. I had the same experience with the “Harry Potter” movies. The young actors who play the main characters are forever in my mind. I can’t remember how I imagined them the first time I read the books, after seeing the movies.
In general though, books are almost always better. Do you agree? What’s your least favorite film made from one of your favorite books? Are you like me and have a few on the good list, like “Hunger Games“, “Harry Potter” and “Gone Girl“?
